Ganeshotsav which marks the birth of Lord Ganesha began as a community festival in the 19th century. It was Indian freedom fighter Lokmanya Tilak who appealed to people who make it a community festival as Britishers were against Indian gatherings. He urged the people to celebrate the festival as a society thus showing resistance to their rule. Lalbaugcha Raja which first began on September 12, 1934, is in its 84th year.

On Anant Chaturthi which falls on September 22 this year, the darshan at Lalbaug will be shut at 10.00 am. The idol is immersed in water after a long procession attended by thousands of people on the streets of Mumbai. With music and dance, the city bids farewell to their favourite God hoping him to visit them soon the next day.
