It is 87 year since Lala Ramswaroop Calendar or Lala Ramswaroop Panchang began in 1934. The traditional Panchang or Patra books started with the aim of presenting a common man simplified Panchang, something they can understand easily. It has been first of its kind. Before we move on to check the important dates of holidays in 2020, let us first understand the meaning of Panchangam or Panchang. It is a Hindu astrological almanack or ephemeris. One considers it to be the official astrological guide of practising Hindus. A typical Panchangam has five main elements - Tithi (Hindu Date), Vara (days of the week), Nakshatra (Group of stars), Yog/Yoga (an auspicious moment) and Karan (half of the part of Tithi).

Beginning with January 2020, the first month of the year will witness harvest festival celebrations like Baisakhi (Lohri), Pongal, Makara Sankranti and Bhogali Bihu. Other important festivals and notable days include Basant Panchami, Republic Day of India, Swami Vivekananda Jayanti, Subhash Chandra Bose Jayanti and Gandhi Punyatithi. Cheti Chand is the New Year for Sindhi Hindus. Hindus in Goa celebrate Samvatsar Padvo while Navreh is the festival commemorated by Kashmiri Pandits.

Coming to the fourth month of the year, April 2020 will see a nine-day festival of Chaitra Navaratri followed by Ram Navami. May 2020 does not have notable Hindu fasts as such but several international observances like Mother’s Day, International Worker’s Day. Coming to June 2020, it is another month low of festivities but high on world days like Father’s Day, World Environment Day, International Yoga Day. July 2020 will see celebrations such as Guru Purnima and Tulsidas Jayanti.

August will open the door to big celebrations as the eighth month of the year will have festivals such as Raksha Bandhan on August 3, Krishna Janmashtami on August 11, Ganesh Chaturthi on August 22 and Onam on August 31. Not only this, there are other significant days like Indian Independence Day on August 15 and Friendship Day on August 2. September 2020 is again full of national and international days.

Coming to October 2020, the tenth month of the year will see Sharad Navratri celebrations across the country. It will have festivals like Durga Ashtami and Dussehra on October 25. There are other big days like Gandhi Jayanti on October 2, Madhvacharya Jayanti on October 26, Valmiki Jayanti and Meera Bai Jayanti on October 31. In November 2020, we will be celebrating Diwali on November 14. Karwa Chauth will be celebrated on November 4, Chhath will begin on November 20 and Guru Nanak Jayanti on November 30. The last month of the year, December 2020 does not have any significant Hindu festival or fast but definitely has many masik vrat (monthly fasts).
