The origin of International Workers’ Day dates back to 4th of May of 1886 when the Haymarket labour demonstration bombing in Chicago commonly known as Haymarket Massacre took place. The International Labour Day commemorates the incident in which a bomb was thrown at the crowd who were on strike demanding an eight-hour working day. It also witnessed police open fire at the people which resulted in the death of four workers. May Day was observed as an anniversary to remember the souls who lost their lives.
In 1904, International Socialist Conference at Amsterdam released a statement saying, “all Social Democratic Party organizations and trade unions of all countries to demonstrate energetically on May First for the legal establishment of the 8-hour day, for the class demands of the proletariat, and for universal peace,” and declared it “mandatory upon the proletarian organizations of all countries to stop work on May 1, wherever it is possible without injury to the workers.”
