Kullu Dussehra History

The history of Kullu Dussehra dates back to the 17th century. According to legends, Raja Jagat Singh, the ruler of Kullu, coveted pearls, even though they were pearls of wisdom, by a peasant named Durgadatta. Durgadatta refused to hand them over to the king and cursed the king before he died. The king them sought the help of Ramanandi saint Krishnadas Payahari, who advised him to bring the deity of Raghunath from Ayodhya to Kullu. The deity was placed on his throne as a mark of penance, and Lord Raghunath was declared the ruling deity of the valley.

After drinking the deity’s holy water, the Raja was cured of his curse. This legend was passed down through generations and is still celebrated till date, where the deity is carried on a chariot. The procession carries deities from different temples, led by Lord Raghunath, from Kullu valley to Dhalpur Maidan. The palanquins are beautifully decorated and devotees chant mantras and say prayers during the procession.
