In Hinduism, the period when the movement of the Sun slows down is considered inauspicious for conducting any pious task or work. This period is known as Kharmas or Malmas. During this month, Hindus keep themselves away from auspicious work like housewarming, marriage, engagement, shaving or construction of new residences. According to astrology, when the  Sun enters Sagittarius, it is called Dhanu Sankranti, which is the start of Kharmas. The month ends when the Sun transits in Capricorn, i.e. on the day of Makar Sankranti. Sometimes it is also known as Dhanu Kharmas. Kharmas 2022 start date is Friday, 16 December and the end date is 15 January 2023. Hindu Festivals 2023 Dates’ List for PDF Download Online: Diwali, Holi, Ganesh Chaturthi, Durga Puja and Navratri, Know About Major Celebrations in New Year.

Kharmas 2022 Time

According to various sources, Kharmas 2022 will begin on 16 December 2022 at 10:11 am and end on 14 January 2023 at 8:57 pm.

Kharmas Significance

The observance of Malmas is not followed in southern, western and eastern parts of India. During this period, from mid-December to mid-January, people worship Lord Surya and Lord Vishnu with utmost reverence. It is often said that offering prayers to Surya Devta and Lord Vishnu will bless the devotee with good fortune and contentment.

Kharmas Dos And Don'ts

During the Kharmas phase, it is not recommended to tie knots as it may lead to a sad and unhealthy marriage life in terms of joy and prosperity. Moreover, celebrations like Janeu and Tonsuring are also avoided during Malmas. Also, stop there if you plan to buy a new vehicle. This activity is also prohibited while Kharmas prevails. One should also say a big No to consuming non-vegetarian food and alcohol during this month. But Kharmas may be a good time for people who have any Pitra Dosh in their Kundli. They can organise Brahmin Bhoj on the no-moon day and offer food and clothes to them. Also, taking holy baths, delivering water to Lord Surya and chanting mantras are recommended during Kharmas.
