Those who observe the Karva Chauth fast do not eat anything during the day and break their fast only after worshipping the moon. They do not even drink water making it a nirjala vrat (fasting without having water). The married women read the Karva Chauth Katha in the early evening hours and break their fast after the moonrise. Many unmarried girls also observe this fast.

Karva Chauth has various mythological stories attached to it. One of the popular stories is about a beautiful princess named Veeravati. As per mythology, the princess, who was the only sister of her seven loving brothers, was married to a king. On the occasion of the first Karwa Chauth after her marriage, Veeravati came to her parents' house. After sunrise, the princess observed a strict fast and as she was delicate, she fainted by evening.
Seeing the condition of the princess, her brothers decided to end her fast. Her seven brothers created an artificial moon for her and told her it was real. Rani Veeravati saw the artificial moon and broke her fast. The moment the Queen broke the fast and started eating, she received the news that her husband was dead. She was told by Lord Shiva and Parvati that it happened as she had broken her fast after looking at an artificial moon.

Karva is another word for 'pot' (a small earthen pot of water) and chauth means 'fourth' in Hindi (a reference to the fact that the festival falls on the fourth day of the dark-fortnight, or Krishna paksh, of the month of Kartik.
The Karva Chauth fasting is traditionally celebrated in the states of Rajasthan, Prayagraj, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Delhi and in parts of Andhra Pradesh. The festival falls on the fourth day after the full moon, in the Hindu lunisolar calendar month of Kartik (October). Married women are seen decked up in traditional attires with Mehendi on their hands. The husbands give gifts to their wives for observing the day-long fast for them. Happy Karvachauth, everyone!
