Karwa Chauth Rituals

The term Karwa Chauth is derived from the two clay pots that are used during the festivals. One of the pots is usually filled with water, while the other pot is usually filled with milk. The day begins early, especially for the married women who have the meal called sargi. This is usually consumed at pre-dawn and is prepared by the mother-in-law. The sargi includes sweets, fruits and savoury dishes to provide nourishment through the day. After this meal, women observe a strict no-food and no-water fast for the entire day until the moon rises.

The clay pots are central to the puja that is conducted in the evening. During the ceremony, the women make offering with the water known as Argha. The offering is made to the moon using the clay pot. Once the ritual is conducted, the karwa is offered to a Brahmin or to an eligible woman. As the evening approaches, women gather together to sing songs and deck themselves in traditional attire and red outfits, symbolising love and marital bliss.

Once the moon rises, the women break their fast. They break the fast by looking at the moon through a sieve and then at their husband’s face through the same sieve. This tradition signifies the belief that their husband is their universe. Husbands offer water and sweets to their wife as a symbol of love and devotion.
