Kargil Vijay Diwas 2019: PM Narendra Modi, Indian Army Pay Tribute to Martyrs on 20th Anniversary of ‘Operation Vijay’
On the 20th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas, Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the nation in paying tributes to the armed forces and soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the country.
New Delhi, July 26: On the 20th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas, Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the nation in paying tributes to the armed forces and soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the country. In a tweet, PM Narendra Modi said he was working with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Jammu and Kashmir, and Himachal Pradesh during the Kargil war and shared his pictures with soldiers of the Indian Army.
"During the Kargil War in 1999, I had the opportunity to go to Kargil and show solidarity with our brave soldiers. This was the time when I was working for my Party in J&K as well as Himachal Pradesh. The visit to Kargil and interactions with soldiers are unforgettable," PM Modi tweeted. The Kargil war was fought for more than 60 days and ended with India regaining control of all the previously held territory. The Indian Army also paid tribute to soldiers killed in the 1999 Kargil war. "26 July immortalized as #KargilVijayDiwas is saga of glorious victory of the Nation during Kargil Conflict in May-July 1999. #IndianArmy soldiers fought legendary battles in Dras, Kaksar, Batalik & Turtok Sectors. #Salute to courage, valour & sacrifice of our martyrs & heroes (sic)," the Army said in a tweet. Earlier today, President Ram Nath Kovind hailed the "grit and valour of those who defended India" on the 20th anniversary of India's triumph in the Kargil war. "On Kargil Vijay Diwas, a grateful nation acknowledges the gallantry of our Armed Forces on the heights of Kargil in 1999. We salute the grit and valour of those who defended India, and record our everlasting debt to those who never returned. Jai Hind," President Kovind tweeted.
The Indian armed forces had successfully carried out the "Operation Vijay" by defeating Pakistan on July 26, 1999. Since then, the day is celebrated as Kargil Vijay Diwas.
