Significance of Kanya Pujan
After doing sthapana of goddess Durga, the deity is worshipped for nine days, however on a ninth day (in some cases, eighth day), nine little girls worshipped as the incarnation of all the forms of goddess Durga. The girls who represent the nine incarnations of Goddess Durga are worshipped just like the deity. The worship begins with the devotees washing the feet of the little girls and then offer them new clothes, sweets and money. The devotees only eat once the little girls have finished eating. Traditional Ashtami Prasad including puri, chana and halwa, is offered to Goddess Durga and then to all the girls. Red dupatta (mata ki chunari) and bangles are also given to the girls. The puja ends with taking blessings from these girls by touching their feet.
As per Hindu beliefs, more the number of kanyas or girls one worships, more the blessings one will get. They say that worshipping one girl child will give you good fortune whereas two will give you better perception and salvation. Similarly, worshipping three girls will give you merit, four authority and five will bless you with knowledge. When you invite and worship six girls you are said to receive six types of siddhis or fulfillments; whereas seven girls will give you power, eight will give you wealth and finally, nine little girls will bless you with supremacy.
