Naraka Chaturdashi, also known as Kali Chaudas, Roop Chaudas, Choti Diwali, Naraka Nivaran Chaturdashi or Bhoot Chaturdashi is a Hindu festival, which falls on Chaturdashi, in the Hindu calendar month of Kartik. Narka Chaturdashi 2020 is on November 13, and it is considered highly auspicious among the devotees. Kali Chaudas is observed during Chaturdashi tithi in Diwali festivity. Kali Chaudas 2020 Date, Chaturdashi Tithi and Muhurat

Kali Chaudas, also called Bhut Chaturdashi, is observed on Chaturdashi Tithi during Diwali festival. It falls on Chaturdashi (14th day) of the Vikram Samvat Hindu calendar month of Kartik. Kali Chaudas or Bhoot Chaturdashi 2020 muhurat is on November 13. According to Drik Panchang, Kali Chaudas muhurat, is from 11:49 pm November 13 to 12:42 am, November 14. Again, the Chaturdashi tithi begins at 7:29 am on November 13 and ends at 3:47 am on November 14, 2020.

Kali Chaudas Significance & Puja Rituals

Kali Chaudas is mainly observed in the Western states, especially Gujarat. The rituals involve visiting crematorium during midnight for offering Puja to the Goddess of darkness and also to Veer Vetal, the day of Kali Chaudas is decided when Chaturdashi prevails during midnight. It is believed that on this day, Maa Kali killed demon Narakasura; this is why the day is also referred to as Naraka Chaturdashi. The day, is observed one day ahead of the Diwali celebration and hence it is also called Choti Diwali.

The puja is performed with oil, flowers and sandalwood. Coconuts are also offered to Lord Hanuman and Prasada of sesame seeds, jaggery and rice flakes with ghee and sugar. The rituals of Kali Chaudas is strongly suggestive of the origin of Diwali as a harvest festival is performed. In Bengali, people place 14 diyas all around the house, as they believe that the 14 forefathers of a family visit their living relatives. The diyas guide them to enter the home and also chase away the evil spirits.
