Significance and Celebrations of Jyestha Gauri Pujan
Goddess Gauri is said to be a form of Goddess Parvati, the mother of Lord Ganesha. One of the legends says, that Goddess Gauri comes to the devotees' house in search of Lord Ganesha, who is residing there for Ganeshotsav. Goddess Gauri brings in prosperity into the homes of whoever she visits. So even if people do not have a Ganpati idol, twin idols of Gauri and Ganesha are worshipped on this day.
Women observe a fast for this day and pray for the well-being of their husbands. The welcoming or Avahana is an event in itself. Women bring in the idol of the Goddess and footprints are marked on her entry into the house. She is adorned with jewellery and a new saree. Unmarried girls worship Devi Parvati to find a good life-partner. She is said to fulfil all the wishes of her devotees. The rituals may differ from place to place.
Gauri Pujan is an auspicious day as each day of Ganeshotsav. The day is marked with great fervour in Maharashtra. Maharashtrian women adorn the Gauri goddess with traditional jewellery. In some regions, Gauri Puja is said to be an Upasana of Goddess Lakshmi.
