Janmashtami, also known as Krishna Ashtami is the birth anniversary of Shri Krishna, the 8th incarnation of Lord Vishnu. The celebration takes place at 12 o'clock at night when Kanha was born. Why is Kanha Placed on Swing on Krishna Ashtami?

The question often arises in people's minds that why is the idol or picture of Lord Krishna placed on the cradle of Janmashtami during worship? Actually, devotees believe that Janmashtami is called Vratraj which means, the chief among all the fasts. They say that Lord Krishna, known for his "bal krina" (childhood acts) needs to be treated like a baby, hence the cradle. For this reason, Janmashtami worship must be done with baby Krishna idol placed in a cradle. Another aspect says that mother Yashoda used to keep Lord Krishna in a swing most often and therefore if devotees to the same and place Nanda Gopal in the cradle,  all their wishes will be fulfilled.
