The festival of Janmashtami is soon approaching. A festive occasion that celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna will be marked on August 23 this year. It is one of the most awaited festivals for the Lord Krishna devotees. Lord Krishna who is believed to the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu was born in Mathura on this day. The celebrations of the day vary from place to place. People perform Krishna puja on this day and prepare special delicacies to please the Lord. Among other celebrations and preparations, Chappan bhog is a traditional practice which offers 56 dishes to Lord Krishna. Lord Krishna or Bal Gopal is known to love butter (Maakhan). But it is not always possible for everyone to prepare an elaborate offering. So Makhan Mishri is also prepared, which is also said to please the Lord equally. It is also one of the items that are offered in the Chappan bhog. Makhan Mishri is offered as prasad to Lord Krishna.
Lord Krishna's love for butter (Makhan) is documented well through his life stories. In fact, Lord Krishna loved it so much that he used to steal it from other houses with his friends. This also gave him the famous name of Makhan chor. According to mythological stories, Lord Krishna's mother Maa Yashoda used to prepare Makhan Mishri and feed him with her own hands. How to Make Makhan Mishri at Home
Ingredients:
- A cup of cream collected from milk or malai
- One teaspoon of Mishri or crystallized sugar lumps
- One teaspoon of chopped dry fruits
Steps:
- Put cold cream and 2 cubes of ice in a blender or whisk them by hand.
- Blend till the butter is separated. Add some cold water.
- Remove the buttermilk.
- Once you have made white butter (Makhan) at home, add mishri or the crystalized sugar to it.
- Blend for a minute.
- Add some saffron or dry fruits as per your choice.
- Makhan Mishri is ready!

As you can see, Makhan Mishri is very easy to make and hardly takes 10 minutes to make if you have all the ingredients. One can alternately also use white butter which is readily available in the market if you do not have enough malai. In that case, even the time to make white butter is reduced. Makhan Mishri can be made within minutes and is also a favourite of Lord Krishna. You can also enhance it by adding more dry fruits.
