The date to celebrate Intersex Day of Remembrance was chosen to honour 19th-century French intersex person, Herculine Barbin’s birth anniversary. She was assigned female at birth and raised in a convent, but was later reclassified as male by a court of law, after an affair and physical examination.

The term is used to refer to a person who is born with ambiguous sexual anatomy that does not allow a medical specialist to assign either male or female sex to the person. An intersex person is born with differences in their sexual characteristics. These differences can affect genes, chromosomes, genitalia, reproductive organs, hormones and also things like body hair.

The first observation of Intersex Day of Remembrance was on November 8, 2005. It was followed by invitation issued by Joëlle-Circé Laramée, then Canadian spokeswoman for Organisation Intersex International.
