International Workers’ Day 2019 or Labour Day History: Date & Significance of the May Day Dedicated to Working Class

The International Worker’s Day, also known as Labour Day or May Day is dedicated to labourers, working class and is a public holiday in many countries. Labour Day has its origin from the labour union movement in the 19th century in the United States when the industrialists and businessman used to exploit the labour class and made them work for 15 hours a day. The workers and labourers rose against this exploitation and demanded proper wages, paid leaves, and other necessary benefits.

This labourers movement in the late 19th-century dented the biggest blow to the cycle of exploitation and made eight-hour work, eight hours for recreation and eight hours for rest a reality. The theme of Labour Day 2019 is "Uniting Workers for Social and Economic Advancement." The importance of Labour Day belongs to the 19th century. Another incident indicates that 1st May was chosen as International Workers’ Day to celebrate the 1886 Haymarket Affair in United States' Chicago. This day is celebrated in many forms in different parts of the world. While in some parts it is celebrated as Labour Day, in others it is celebrated as International Workers day and even May Day in many European countries.
