Earth Day is observed on April 22 globally to promoting harmony with nature and improve mankind's effect on the planet. Earth Day 2018 theme is 'End Plastic Pollution'. It aims at inspiring people to change their attitude and behaviour towards nature. Earth Day promotes reduction in plastic usage internationally and aims towards a clean environment.
According to the United Nations, 'International Mother Earth Day is celebrated to remind each of us that the Earth and its ecosystems provide us with life and sustenance'. The day aims 'to achieve a just balance among the economic, social, and environmental needs of present and future generations'.
Why is it called International Mother Earth Day?
The day is named as in the resolution, Mother Earth is 'a common expression for planet earth in a number of countries and regions, which reflects the interdependence that exists among human beings, other living species and the planet we all inhabit'. The day is celebrated to remind us that the Earth and its ecosystems provide us with life and sustenance.
How did it start?
The day came into being in 2009 when the General Assembly wanted to add an observance in achieving the balance between economic, social and environmental needs of current and future generations. With Earth Day already being celebrated on the same day in many countries, the UN decided to assign April 22 to International Mother Earth Day through resolution A/RES/63/278.
The Eighth Interactive Dialogue of the General Assembly on Harmony with Nature will be held on April 23, 2018, in the ECOSOC Chamber commemorating the Mother Earth Day. The Interactive Dialogue will provide a platform to discuss sustainable production in Harmony with Nature.
It is to ensure that people everywhere have the relevant information and awareness for sustainable development and lifestyles. It also tries to inspire societies to reconsider how to live in harmony with nature in the context of sustainable development.
