International Literacy Day, adopted by the United Nations 50 years ago to promote literacy in the third world, is observed annually on September 8. The day was first celebrated on October 26, 1966 -- a year after the UN adopted the idea at World Conference of Ministers of Education on the Eradication of Illiteracy held in Tehran. In 2015, International Literacy Day was adopted as part of the UN’s sustainable development goals program in 2015.

This year’s theme ‘Literacy and Skills Development’ explores integrated approaches that simultaneously support the development of literacy and skills, to ultimately improve people’s lives and work and contribute to equitable and sustainable societies. The day focuses on skills and competencies required for employment, careers and livelihoods, particularly technical and vocational skills along with transferable and digital skills. Sustainable Development Goal 4 has as one of its targets ensuring all young people achieve literacy and numeracy and that adults who lack these skills are given the opportunity to acquire them.
International Literacy Day is celebrated to promote the human attention towards literacy and their rights for social and human development. The day is also celebrated towards getting continuous education and understand their responsibilities for the family, society and the country. The day is also celebrated having special themes for each year and programs are conducted all over the world.
