Every year, International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances is observed on August 30 around the world to raise awareness about the issue of enforced disappearances. The day commemorates the victims who have suffered from this grave human rights violation and draws attention to the plight of individuals imprisoned at places and under poor conditions unknown to their relatives or families. International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances History

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), on December 21, 2010, by its resolution 65/209, expressed concerns about the increase in enforced or involuntary disappearances in various regions of the world, including arrest, detention, and abduction. It also added that the growing number of reports concerning harassment, ill-treatment and intimidation of witnesses of disappearances or relatives of persons who have disappeared was worrisome. Hence, by the exact resolution, the Assembly welcomed the adoption of the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance and decided to declare August 30 the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances, to be observed beginning in 2011.

Enforced disappearances are often accompanied by various forms of abuse, including torture and extrajudicial killings, and hence, this day serves as an opportunity to remember and honour the victims. The day also draws attention to the plight of the victims' families, who continue to look out for their missing loved ones. On this day, various human rights organizations, governments and communities worldwide organize events, seminars, workshops, and campaigns to raise awareness about the issue and advocate for the rights of the victims and their families.
