Every year, International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances is observed on August 30 around the world to raise awareness about the issue of enforced disappearances. The day commemorates the victims who have suffered from this grave human rights violation and draws attention to the plight of individuals imprisoned at places and under poor conditions unknown to their relatives or families. The impulse for the day came from the Latin American Federation of Associations for Relatives of Detained-Disappeared, a non-governmental organization founded in 1981 in Costa Rica that works against secret imprisonment, forced disappearances and abduction in many Latin American countries. Julian Sands Family Releases First Statement Since His Hiking Disappearance in California.
