It is International Day of No Prostitution today. An event observed on October 5, every year. As the name suggests, the day aims at opposing prostitution. Prostitution has been spreading like cancer, especially with the lack of stronger laws and action taken against brothels, 'pimps' and the whole system of illegal prostitution. The International Day of No Prostitution was started in Australia and the U.S. in the year 2002. When it comes to prostitution in India, the statistics are horrifying.  Ministry of Women and Child Development report has it that over three million female sex workers function in India. About 35.47 percent of the total number enter the world of prostitution before the age of 18. Even more shocking is that over 1.2 million children are involved as well. As we all know a large number of people are tricked into prostitution, many teens and kids fall prey to malicious sex trafficked in India. Talking about the laws surrounding prostitution, here are prostitution rules from across the world:

India

Prostitution is legal in India. However, restrictions do exist for other activities linked to prostitution. From kerb-crawling, owning or managing a brothel, prostitution in a hotel, child prostitution to pandering, all these activities are illegal in India. However, illegal activities do take place in most cities in India. Time and again reports have proven illegal brothels being raided by the police.

Canada

Canada has a kind of complicated prostitution law. So, according to the Conservative government introduced laws on sex work in 2014, it is illegal to "purchase or advertise sexual services and illegal to live on the material benefits from sex work." However, it is legal to sell sexual services.

The U.S.A.

Except for Nevada, a prohibition against buying or selling sexual services exists in the United States. Brothels are licensed in some parts of Nevada. The U.K.

Prostitution is legal in Great Britain however, other activities such as human trafficking,  brothels, "kerb-crawling" and public soliciting are criminal offences.

Bangladesh

Prostitution is legal in Bangladesh, however, male prostitution is illegal in the country.  Pimping and owning a brothel is legal as well. Bangladesh is also fighting a grave minor trafficking situation currently.

New Zealand

Prostitution is legal in NZ and the workers receive social benefits just like other employees in the country.  Licensed brothels operate under public health and employment laws.

Colombia

Working in the sex industry is legal in Colombia.  Pimping or pandering is prohibited though.

Denmark

Prostitution is legal here and is also supported by the government with social benefits.  Sex workers with disabilities get are provided with extra benefits from the government.

Germany

Prostitution was legalised here in 1927 and state-run brothels function in the country where the sex- workers are even provided with proper health insurance. They even receive social benefits like pensions.

Indonesia

No clear law related to prostitution exists in the system. Sex trade does take place in the country and forced workers and minors live in a  vulnerable situation.

Illegal prostitution takes place in India with cases popping up every now and then on the news. Earlier this year, Goa Police busted a prostitution racket that was being run from Calangute area. Police said that one person has been arrested in connection with the crime. Calangute police also rescued two women and shifted them to State Protective Home in January.
