Every year, the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is observed on October 17. It was first established by the United Nations in 1992, following the initiative of French priest Father Joseph Wresinski, who founded the International Movement ATD Fourth World. The global event aims to raise awareness about the global issue of poverty, promote understanding, and recognise the efforts made by people living in poverty to fight against it. The October 17 Commemorative Stone that Father Joseph Wesinski unveiled at the Trocadero Plaza in 1987 is recognised as a symbol of humanity, which enshrines his words: ‘Wherever men and women are condemned to live in extreme poverty, human rights are violated. To come together to ensure that these rights be respected is our solemn duty’. Quotes on Poverty and Hunger by Jeff Bridges, Mother Teresa, Kofi Annan, and Others To Observe International Day of the Eradication of Poverty.

Poverty has multiple dimensions, some visible and others hidden, but all are interlinked and affects humanity greatly.
