Date and History of International Cheetah Day

International Cheetah Day is celebrated on December 4 to raise awareness about the need for helping cheetahs fight extinction. The origins of this day can be traced to 1977 when American Zoologist Dr Laurie Marker took a cheetah she raised from a cub to Namibia from Oregon as part of an experiment to see if cheetahs could be taught to hunt and live in the wild. During her stay, she realised how the livestock owners posed a threat to the cheetah population in the wild and started educating them about wildlife preservation. Since 2010, International Cheetah Day is celebrated on December 4 to honour her cheetah, Khayam, on his birthday and to raise awareness about the threats cheetahs face. From Javan Rhinos, and Polar Bears to Tasmanian Devil, Know About 7 of The Most Endangered Animal Species in The World.

Significance and Ways to Observe International Cheetah Day

This day not only aims to make people learn more about cheetahs but also helps everyone understand why they need help and how people can contribute to the cause. The Cheetah Conservation Fund was formed in 1991 by Dr Marker to unite people for the preservation of cheetahs. People celebrate this day by learning more about cheetahs, going on a safari and doing their bit to help save them from extinction.
