What is Operation Trident:
During the Indo-Pak War in 1971, Pakistan launched an attack on December 3 on Indian air bases. The same night, IAF Canberra aircrafts struck Pakistani airfields as ground battles immediately commenced in nearly every sector. On the night of December 3- INS Nipat, INS Nirghat and INS Veer Indian sailed from Okha Port in Gujarat, towards Pakistani waters following orders to attack the Karachi port, the stronghold of the Pakistani Navy. At just before midnight, the Rangout radar on INS Nirghat picked up a big target — PNS Khaiber, a destroyer of Pak Navy. This was soon followed by the detection of two more targets, PNS Shah Jehan and merchant vessel Venus Challenger.
Indian warships fired six missiles in 90 minutes which resulted in sinking four enemy vessels including a cargo ship carrying ammunition and destroyed the fuel storage facility at the Karachi harbour, without a single Indian casualty.
Indian Navy repeated a similar feat four days later in Operation Python in which it sank another three ships of the Pakistani Navy and setting the oil stores on fire for the second time.
The successful operation by Indian Navy proved to be an important stage in the liberation of Bangladesh. The country also celebrates Indian Navy Day on December 4 to pay tributes to magnificence, achievements and role of Indian naval force to the country.
