India will celebrate its 73rd Independence Day on August 15 marking the end of the British rule in the country. India became a free nation on August 15, 1947. The country was a British colony for almost 200 years. Many Indians sacrificed their lives to make the country an independent nation. On every Independence Day, people of India pay tribute to the heroes of freedom struggle. The first war of Independence was fought in 1857. However, people of Independent India know only about few prominent freedom fighters like Mahatma Gandhi, Bhagat Singh, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and Chandra Shekhar Azad. Here Are Some of The Unsung Heroes of Indian Freedom Struggle:

Aruna Asaf Ali: She is widely remembered for hoisting the Indian National flag at the Gowalia Tank maidan in Bombay during the Quit India Movement. She also participated in public processions during the Salt Satyagraha.

Matangini Hazra: She was an Indian revolutionary who participated in the Indian independence movement. She was shot dead by the British Indian police in front of the Tamluk Police Station. Hazra had participated in Quit India Movement and Non-Cooperation Movement.

Kartar Singh Sarabha: He was was a revolutionary who fought for the Indian freedom struggle. Sarabha was 17 years old when he became a member of the Ghadar Party. Singh was executed at Lahore in November 1915 when he was just 19 years of age.

Bhikaji Cama: She was one of the prominent figures in the Indian independence movement. Cama was also a figure for gender equality. She unfurled the Indian flag at the International Socialist Conference at Stuttgart in Germany, 1907.

Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay:  She was an Indian social reformer and freedom activist. She was most remembered for her contribution to the Indian independence movement for being the driving force behind the renaissance of Indian handicrafts, handlooms, and theatre in independent India. Chattopadhyay also worked for the upliftment of the socio-economic standard of Indian women.

Garimella Satyanarayana: He was a poet and freedom fighter of Andhra Pradesh. Satyanarayana influenced and mobilised the Andhra people against the British Raj with his patriotic songs and writings. He was also jailed by the British administration several times.

Tirupur Kumaran: He was an Indian revolutionary who fought against British rule. Kumaran founded Desa Bandhu Youth Association and led protests against the British. He died from injuries sustained from a police assault on the banks of Noyyal River in Tiruppur during a protest march.

Lakshmi Sahgal: She was an officer of the Indian National Army formed by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. She was the Minister of Women's Affairs in the Azad Hind government. Sahgal is commonly referred to in India as "Captain Lakshmi", a reference to her rank when taken prisoner in Burma during the Second World War.

Tirot Sing: He was one of the chiefs of the Khasi people in the early 19th century. He fought against British attempts to take over control of the Khasi hills. He died on July 17, 1835, while fighting with the British.

Abadi Bano Begum: She was a prominent voice in the Indian independence movement. She was also known as Bi Amman. Begum was one of the first Muslim women to actively take part in politics and was part of the movement to free India from the British Raj.

It has been 72 years since India received independence from the clutches of the British empire. While leaving India, Britishers divided it into two countries - India and Pakistan. On Independence Day, celebrations are held across the nation. Independence Day is observed throughout India with flag-hoisting ceremonies, parades and cultural events.
