Hiroshima, the capital of Hiroshima Prefecture in Japan was bombed during the Second World War on August 6, 1945. It was founded in the year 1589 as a castle town on the Ōta River delta. Hiroshima Day is observed as a day of remembrance of the first atomic bombing of the world by the United States. Hiroshima Day 2019 will mark 74th anniversary of the disastrous event. The bombings in Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, during World War 2 killed more than a quarter of a million souls. Another bomb was dropped on Nagasaki on August 9, 1945, which killed over 2,00,000 people and injured many. The nuclear weapon named 'Little Boy' was dropped on Hiroshima by an American Boeing B-29 Superfortress, directly killing over 70,000 people, including thousands of Korean slave labourers in Hiroshima. The nuclear weapon named 'Fat Man' was dropped on Nagasaki which killed lakhs of people. The attack also crippled the majority of Japanese infrastructure affecting the economy terribly.

As a result, Emperor of Japan Hirohito announced unconditional surrender in World War II in radio on 15 August by informing the devastating power of a new and most cruel bomb. While Japan has revived out of the crisis majorly, they continue to face consequences even today. Following the terrible catastrophe, nuclear weapons have never been dropped on any country by another. The radiation emitted during the moment of detonation caused terrible damage to human bodies leaving people crippled for generations.

Various peaceful ceremonies are organised on this day. August 2, 2019, will witness thousands of people in attendance at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park. Around 50,000 people will gather together to remember the first atomic attack. Prayer services, vigils and demonstrations are held on this day.
