In April 1966, the Shah Commission was set up by the government to divide the existing state of Punjab and determine the boundaries of the new state of Haryana. In April 1966, the Shah Commission was set up by the government to divide the existing state of Punjab. The commission headed by Justice JC Shah determined the boundaries of the new state after consideration of the languages spoken by the people. Haryana came into existence on November 1, 1966 almost one and half month after The Punjab Reorganisation Act was passed by the Indian Parliament on September 18, 1966, dissolving the former state of East Punjab.
