On the day, women fast and pray to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati for marital bliss. They stay awake throughout the night and chant hymns of Shiva and Parvati. Women drape themselves in beautiful sarees and apply mehendi (henna) on their palms and feet. Married women visit their maternal homes and seek blessings from the elders of the house. While Hartalika Teej is widely celebrated in North India, it is also observed in parts of South Indian states like Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh where it is known as Gowri Habba.
