Hariyali Teej is celebrated with a great fanfare by Hindu women, especially in the northern states of India. The festival marks great importance in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand. Three famous Teej(s) which are celebrated in India during Savan/ Shravan and Bhadrapada months are - Hariyali Teej, Kajari Teej and Hartalika Teej. In 2019, Hariyali Teej falls on August 3, in the holy month of Sawan in which people observe fasts devoted to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Hariyali Teej is dedicated to the worship of Goddess Parvati and her holy union with Lord Shiva. On this day, women wake up early, get dressed up in colourful clothes and fast for their husbands' good health and long marital life. The festival falls on Shukla Paksha Tritiya in Shravana month and usually falls two days before Nag Panchami. The festival is dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.

Hariyali Teej Date 2019 and Puja Mahurat

Teej is third day that falls every month after the new moon (Amavasya), and the third day after the full moon night of every month. This year Hariyali Teej falls on 3rd August 2019.

According to Drikpanchang, the Tritiya Tithi would begin at 01:36 am on August 3, 2019 and end on the same day at 10:06 pm.

Pooja Vidhi For Hariyali Teej

On this day, women offer bel patra, fruits, flowers to Goddess Parvati, sing songs and listen to folk tales. The women break their day-long fasts with a vegetarian meal. The morning time is considered good to perform Hartalika Puja. Teej Puja should be done after taking early bath and getting dressed up with fine clothes. During the Puja, sand made Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati should be worshipped and legend of Hartalika should be narrated during the Puja.

The Main Puja Steps Include the Following–

  1. Morning bath with Sesame and Amalak powder dressing up with fine clothes
  2. Sankalp to perform Hartalika Vrat to please Uma-Maheshwar
  3. Worship Lord Ganesh before worshipping Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati
  4. Shodashopachara Pooja of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati
  5. Anga Puja for Goddess Parvati

During Hariyali Teej married women visit their parents' home after which, a bucket of gift (Sindhara) is sent to the daughter and her in-laws by the parents of married girl. The Sindhara contains homemade sweets, Ghewar , Henna, bangles etc.
