Onam, the harvest festival of Kerala will be celebrated today. This 10-day-long festival began on August 15 and the main day known as Thiruvonam falls on August 25 this year. The day falls in the month of Chingam, as per the Malayalam calendar, Kollavarsham. As Kerala recuperates from the deadly floods that affected the state earlier this month, celebrations have been cut short this year. However, celebrations showcasing the spirit of the state have begun. Meanwhile, people have taken to social media wishing everyone a 'Happy Onam'. A traditional 26-dish 'Onam Sadya', is the main attraction of the day. While the celebrations have been curtailed down with many living in camps, there are some trying to cheer them up. Many volunteers sent Onam kits to people while efforts were taken to cook a decent Onam lunch to nearly a million persons still lodged in relief camps. Political leaders in Tamil Nadu today extended Onam greetings to the people of Kerala wishing. Chief Minister K Palaniswami, while sending Onam greetings, recalled the "love and compassion" shown by the state government in extending a Rs 10 crore assistance to Kerala, besides providing aid materials like medicines, dresses and milk powder.
