Onam, the harvest festival of Kerala will be celebrated today. This 10-day-long festival began on August 15 and the main day known as Thiruvonam falls on August 25 this year. The day falls in the month of Chingam, as per the Malayalam calendar, Kollavarsham. As Kerala recuperates from the deadly floods that affected the state earlier this month, celebrations have been cut short this year. However, celebrations showcasing the spirit of the state have begun. Meanwhile, people have taken to social media wishing everyone a 'Happy Onam'. Onam is celebrated to greet the demon King Mahabali who was trampled under feet by Lord Vishnu and sent to the netherworld. However, the king being kind and generous, asked for a wish that was to meet his people on the day of Thiruonam every year. It is believed that Kerala witnessed its best time during the reign of King Mahabli. Not only was the land overflowing with riches and prosperity, but people lived in peace and communal harmony. A traditional 26-dish 'Onam Sadya', is the main attraction of the day. While the celebrations have been curtailed down with many living in camps, there are some trying to cheer them up. Political leaders in Tamil Nadu today extended Onam greetings to the people of Kerala wishing. Chief Minister K Palaniswami, while sending Onam greetings, recalled the "love and compassion" shown by the state government in extending a Rs 10 crore assistance to Kerala, besides providing aid materials like medicines, dresses and milk powder.
