Another interesting tale about Hanuman’s birth is related to Vayu (the Wind God) as he is often called Vayuputra Hanuman or the son of Vayu. As per Marathi saint and scholar, Eknath’s Bhavartha Ramayana written in the 16th century CE how Vayu played an integral role in Hanuman’s birth. It so happened that the King Dasharatha of Ayodhya had performed the ritual of Putrakama yagna to have children and as a result received some sacred pudding. He was to divide it among his three wives (Kausalya, Kaikeyi and Sumitra) leading to the birth of Rama, Lakshmana, Bharata, and Shatrughna. However, by divine order, a kite snatched a portion of the pudding and went flying over the forest where Mata Anjana was praying to Shiva for a child. Vayu, the Hindu deity of Wind helped deliver the falling pudding to Anjana, who consumed it and Hanuman was born as its result. While according to another story, Shiva pleased with Anjana and Kesari’s penance, directed Vayu to transfer his male energy to Anjana’s womb and Hanuman was born.
