According to Hindu tradition, Guru Poornima is dedicated to spiritual and academic teachers and is observed on full moon day of Shakha Samavat. The word 'gu' indicates darkness and 'ru' suggests the removal of darkness. So "guru" is someone who removes darkness from our lives and guides us on the right path.
