Today marks a very important celebration in Punjab. It is the Parkash Utsav Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, a regional Indian festive day that is marked in the state of Punjab. The festival is celebrated on the 15th day (new moon) of Bhadon, sixth month in Punjabi calendar. So it usually falls between the months of August and September. This day commemorates the first parkash (opening ceremony) of the Guru Granth Sahib in the Golden Temple of Amritsar in the year 1604. The Guru Granth Sahib is holy scripture, rather a principal scripture for people who follow the faith. So the Parkash Utsav is an important landmark for people of the Sikh community all over the world. Guru Granth Sahib is considered to be the Word of God spoken through the Sikh Gurus and saints. It is the final sovereign, and eternal living guru. The final text of this holy scripture has 1,430 angs (pages) and 6,000 śabads (line compositions). These are poetically written, set to a rhythmic Indian classical form of music in the north. It was composed by Guru Nanak Dev, Guru Angad Dev, Guru Amar Das, Guru Ram Das, Guru Arjan Dev, Guru Tegh Bahadur and Guru Gobind Singh. The Holy Words written in this scripture are referred to as Gurbani which means, 'from the Guru's mouth'. Guru Nanak Dev Ji started the Granth Sahib, with his collection of holy hymns. Subsequently, other Gurus followed the tradition. The installation of Adi Granth by Arjan Dev Ji, the fifth Guru took place in the Sri Harmandir Sahib (now known as Golden Temple) took place on October 16, 1604.
