Shaheedi Diwas of Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji, the fifth guru of the Sikhs falls on June 17. Guru Arjan Dev was born on April 15, 1563, in Goindwal Sahib. He was martyred on May 30, 1606, for refusing to alter Gurbani at the wish of Mughal Emperor Jehangir. The day is marked with various celebrations including serving of sweetened pink water along with other eatables outside Gurudwaras. As the drink is called Chabeel, it is also referred to as 'Chabeel Day'. Every year locals come in large number to offer prayers at the local Darbar Sahib in Amritsar.
On the death anniversary of fifth Sikh Guru Arjan Dev, Punjab Chief Minister, Capt Amarinder Singh on Saturday paid tributes to him. In a message, the chief minister urged people to follow Guru Arjan Dev's ideals of humanity, secularism and universal brotherhood. He said that the Guru's supreme sacrifice was a source of inspiration for mankind.

Guru Arjan who suspected he might never return on being summoned by Lahore by the Mughal Emperor Jahangir appointed his son Hargobind as his spiritual successor on May 25, 1606. There are various references and mentions of Guru Arjan's execution at the hands of the Mughals. One of the prominent records is that it was Jahangir's growing insecurity because of which he felt threatened by the growing power of the Sikh community. Following the death of Guru Arjan, his son Guru Hargobind led the Sikh community for over 37 years. He brought in militarisation and raised an army of trained soldiers to take on Mughals who were ruling parts of India.
