Gowri Habba is a Hindu festival dedicated to Goddess Gowri or Gauri, an incarnation of Goddess Parvati. It is a significant festival in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu, and it is observed a day before Ganesh Chaturthi. Gowri Habba is celebrated mainly by married women. On this day, Gowri, the mother of Ganesha and wife of Shiva, is worshipped for her ability to bestow her devotees with courage and power. - The Pratahkala Gowri Puja Muhurat will begin at 06:26 AM and last until 08:53 AM on September 18.
- The Tadige Tithi will begin at 11:08 AM on September 17, 2023, and end at 12:39 PM on September 18, 2023.
Gowri Habba Puja Vidhi
- On this day, married women should take a bath early in the morning and wear new. Devotees should now do the 'sthapana' of either jalagauri or arishinadagauri (a symbolic idol of Gowri made of turmeric).
- The idol of the Goddess is mounted on a plate with cereal (rice or wheat) in it. This puja should be performed with 'suchi' (cleanliness) and 'shraddhe' (dedication).
- A mantapa, generally decorated with banana stems and mango leaves, is built around the idol and the Gowri is decorated with flowers.
- Recite Katha and chant Aarti, dedicated to Goddess Parvati. Women complete the ritual by offering Bhog Prasad to the Goddess and then break their fast in the evening with fruits and milk products.
An offering of ‘baagina’, a packet of arshina (turmeric), kumkum, black bangles, black beads (used in the mangalsutra), a comb, a small mirror, coconut, blouse piece, dhaanya (cereal), rice, toor dal, green dal, wheat or rava and jaggery cut in a cube form takes place during the festival. At least five baaginas are prepared as part of the vrat one of which is offered to Gowri and set aside. The remaining Gowri baaginas are given to married women.
Gowri Habba Significance
According to religious beliefs, it is said that Gowri is the incarnation of Aadhi Shakthi Mahamaya. She is the Shakthi of Shiva. It is believed that on Thadige, or the third day of the month of Bhadra, Gowri comes to her parents' house like any other married woman. The next day, Ganesha, her son, comes as if to take her back to Kailasa. Gowri Habba is known as Hartalika in the North Indian states of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh. This festival celebrates the goddess Gowri or Gauri, also known as Parvati.
