Gauri Vrat, also known as Gauri Puja or Jaya Parvati Vrat, is a Hindu fasting and worship ritual dedicated to Goddess Parvati, also referred to as Gauri. Gauri Vrat falls in the month of Ashadha which corresponds to the month of June or July in the Gregorian calendar. During this observance, unmarried women fast for five days and worship the Goddess Parvati in order to seek an ideal husband. Gauri Vrat 2024 is set to begin on July 17 and end on July 21. Foods containing salt are not eaten; instead, items such as wheat flour, milk, ghee and fruits are consumed. The festival is observed mainly in the state of Gujarat. Gauri Vrat is usually observed for five days during the Hindu month of Ashadha. It begins on the Shukla Paksha Ekadashi and ends after five days on Purnima day, the day of Guru Purnima. This vrat is observed primarily by girls for an ideal husband and is popular in the western states of India, such as Gujarat and Maharashtra.

Gauri Vrat 2024 Dates and Shubh Muhurat

Gauri Vrat 2024 is set to begin on Wednesday, July 17 and end on Sunday, July 21. The Jaya Parvati Vrat will be celebrated on Friday, July 19. The Ekadashi tithi will begin at 08:33 PM on July 16 and end at 09:02 PM on July 17, 2024.

Gauri Vrat Puja Rituals

1. On the first day of the Gauri Vrat, wheat seeds (javaara) are planted in a small bowl/pot and kept by the temple in the house.

2. Prayers are then offered to the javaar pot. A nagla, which is a necklace made from cotton wool, is decorated with vermillion (kumkum). This ritual is carried out every morning and the wheat seeds are watered.

3. On the last day, the women who have observed the fast have to remain awake the whole night of the fifth day, called Jagran.

4. On the sixth day, the javara are taken out of the pot are immersed in the holy waters of rivers or ponds after taking a bath and wearing beautiful dresses; offer prayers at Mataji's temple and break the fast by eating a full meal consisting of salt, chapatis made of wheat, and vegetables.

Gauri Vrat Significance

Gauri Vrat holds great significance for many Hindu families. It is believed that Gauri Vrat or Jaya Parvati vrat brings happiness and blesses the girl with a good husband and a happy married life. For unmarried girls, observing Gauri Vrat is believed to help them find a suitable and loving husband, while for married women, the vrat is a means to pray for the longevity and prosperity of their husbands and families.

It must be noted that devotees observing Jaya Parvati vrat cannot eat tomatoes, spices, salt, and vegetables. Devotees, particularly unmarried girls and married women observe a strict fast. Some may choose to consume only fruits and milk, while others may opt for a complete fast.
