Gatari Amavasya which is a No Moon Day marks the end of Hindu month of Ashadha. During the observance which falls before the holy month of Shravan, people indulge in feasting and celebrations. As it is based on moon sighting, the date changes every year. Gatari Amavasya falls on July 31 this year. Better known as Gatari, the day is celebrated popularly in the Indian state of Maharashtra. People observe the day with family and friends making merry, eating and drinking to their heart's content. The day is also known as Deep Amavasya and Ashadha Amavasya

Gatari marks the last day of celebrations before the month of Shravan begins. Maharashtrians who following the traditions of Shravan, eat only one meal a day and refrain from eating non-vegetarian food and alcohol consumption. So before the month begins, people enjoy the food of their heart's desire a day prior to Shravan. Drinking alcohol is a part of this observance. Gatari gets its name from the fact that people drink so much that then end up being in a gutter. Non-vegetarian food, especially chicken is eaten widely on Gatari.

Following eating and drinking, people prepare to eat simple food for Shravan. Several restaurants and eateries offer discounts and offer to mark the day. They also do good business and open for long hours. Maharashtrians wish each other on this day by sending Gatari jokes and memes. Chicken, fish and prawns are among popular dishes made on this day. The day is known for getting drunk and preparing for a month of light food.
