The festival of Ganpati is ongoing and people are busy taking care of their favourite idol at their respective homes. Today marks the fifth day of Ganpati visarjan. A lot of household idols will be immersed today along with Goddess Gauri. Some people keep only Goddess Gauri, decorate the house for her welcome, adorn her with jewellery. The Gauri visarjan will be conducted today. This ritual is especially observed in Maharashtra. During the 10 days of the festival, Gauri puja is performed. This year, Gauri puja began on September 15 with the welcoming of the Goddess Gauri and will end tomorrow on September 17 with visarjan. Gauri is believed to Ganesha’s sisters – Jyestha and Kanishta, who have come looking for him. Two idols of Goddess Gauri are brought home and worshipped. Some also believe that Gauri is form of Goddess Parvati, Lord Ganesha’s mother. Gauri puja is done to welcome wealth and prosperity into the home. The first day is called Gauri Avahan where the Goddess is invited into the home. When the idols arrive, they are adorned with new clothes and ornaments especially the ones worn by married women like mangalsutra and toe rings. Many women also dress up in green sari as green is the colour of harvest and fertility. On the day of the visarjan, the idol is offered vermillion and turmeric, a piece of cloth, money, betel leaves and nuts. After this, the idol is immersed in the water. According to legends, it is believed that these two sisters in the form of Goddess Gauri follow Ganesha to every home he visits.
