The visarjan is performed on several other days apart from the last day. People immerse the idol on 1.5, 3, 5, 7 and 9 days of Ganpati. Before sending the idol off, people perform the last aarti and ask for his forgiveness. They also request him to come soon again next year. Hence, people send him off with equal zest and fervour, the way they welcomed him. After visarjan some of them take a little bit of the melted mud from the idol's body and place it in a pot. It is then later kept in the mandir or safely in the home.
