According to the Hindu lunisolar calendar, Ganesh Chaturthi begins on Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi (the third day of the lunar month of Bhadrapada) corresponding to August-September in the Gregorian Calendar. This year the Chaturthi Tithi begins on September 2, 2019, 04:57 AM and end on September 03 2019 01:54 AM. This Tithi or the auspicious time defines when the traditional puja or establishing of the idol along with the sacred rituals can be carried out. Ganesh Chaturthi 2019 Puja Vidhi

On the day of Vinayaka Chaturthi, the family members establish the altar for the puja. The Ganpati idol is first bathed brought home with great pomp and joy. Once the idol is placed on the singhasan in a makhar, the family member begins with the offerings. The modak and druva (grass) are the chiefs amongst them.

The Ganesha Aarti happens twice during the entire festivities, and the puja is considered incomplete without it. Those who want to fast can only break it once the Aarti is completed.
