Gandhi Jayanti is an annual celebration that is marked annually on October 2 in India and several countries around the world. The day marks the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the key leader of India's independence movement and a global symbol of non-violence and peace. It is a national holiday in India and also observed worldwide as the International Day of Non-Violence, in recognition of Gandhi's philosophy of non-violence. Gandhi Jayanti is one of the three national holidays in India. Gandhiji is also known as ‘Father of The Nation’, a title given by Subhas Chandra Bose.

Gandhiji’s full name was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. He was born on October 2, 1869, in Porbandar in Gujarat and is revered for leading India’s non-violent struggle for independence from British rule, advocating civil rights, and promoting social reform through principles of Satyagraha. His ideas of self-reliance, simple living, and non-cooperation have inspired global movements for civil rights.

Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated in all of India's states and territories and is marked by prayer services and tributes across India. The statues of Mahatma Gandhi across India are decorated with flowers and garlands to honour his legacy. The activities include prayer meetings, commemorative ceremonies in different cities by colleges, local government institutions and socio-political institutions.  Gandhi's favourite bhajan named Raghupati Raghava Raja Ram, is usually sung in his memory. On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi started the Swachh Bharat Mission.
