The Hilal Committee in Sri Lanka is expected to issue an announcement after sunset on the sighting of Shawwal moon. If the moon is sighted, Eid al-Fitr will be celebrated tomorrow.

Muslims in Sri Lanka will celebrate Eid or Eid al-Fitr on June 5, i.e. Wednesday if the moon is sighted in any part of the country on Tuesday. An official announcement related to the sighting of the moon will be made by the Hilal Committee of Sri Lanka after the Maghrib prayers. Meanwhile, the moon was sighted in various Gulf countries including Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates on Monday. The hilal crescent or a new moon, if sighted in Sri Lanka today, will be visible only for a couple of minutes around sunset as today is the 29th date of the lunar month.

In case, the Hilal Committee would not be able to sight the crescent then the fasting will be extended for one more day. Then the Eid will fall on Thursday, the first day of the new month of Shawwal. With the sighting of the moon, the celebrations of Eid will begin. The moon sighting will also mark the end of the Islamic holy month of fasting – Ramadan.
