Eid or Eid al-Fitr is the first day of the Islamic month of Shawwal. This year, it will be celebrated in Indiaās Delhi, PunjabĀ and Haryana on June 5 if the moon is sighted in any part of these states of the country on Tuesday. Hilal community, the apex Islamic body of these areas will officially announce the sighting of the moon after the Maghrib prayers. The date for the start of any lunar Hijri month varies based on when the new moon is sighted by local religious authorities. The exact date of Eid Celebrations varies from area to area. The crescent or a new moon will be visible only for a couple of minutes around sunset on the 29th day of the holy month of Ramadan and if the Hilal Community could not be able to sight the crescent then the fasting will be extended for one more day.
The moon sighting will also mark the end of the Islamic holy month of fasting ā Ramadan.Ā As part of Eid celebrations, Muslims offer a special prayer in open areas like community centres or at mosques. On the festival of Eid, social gatherings are organised. Special dishes are made on this occasion and are distributed to friends and relatives.
The Eid was celebrated on June 4, in various Gulf countries including Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. However, someĀ Middle EastĀ countries including Jordan, Oman and Palestine will celebrate Eid on June 5 as the moon was not sighted there.
