London, June 3: Muslims in the United Kingdom - England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland - will attempt to sight the crescent moon today to mark the beginning of Eid or Eid al-Fitr celebrations. Designated religious authorities, including those appointed by the Birmingham Central Mosque, will make a formal announcement about a sighting of the moon. The sighting of the moon will not only mark the beginning of Eid celebration but also the end of the Islamic holy month of fasting – Ramadan. A new month, under the Islamic lunar calendar, begins upon the sighting of a crescent moon on the 29th day of the ongoing month. If the moon is not sighted, the month completes 30 days and a new month begins the next day. Muslims in England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland have observed 29 Ramadan fast till today.
