London, June 3: Muslims in the United Kingdom - England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland - will attempt to sight the crescent moon today to mark the beginning of Eid or Eid al-Fitr celebrations. Designated religious authorities, including those appointed by the Birmingham Central Mosque, will make a formal announcement about a sighting of the moon. The sighting of the moon will not only mark the beginning of Eid celebration but also the end of the Islamic holy month of fasting – Ramadan. A new month, under the Islamic lunar calendar, begins upon the sighting of a crescent moon on the 29th day of the ongoing month. If the moon is not sighted, the month completes 30 days and a new month begins the next day. Muslims in England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland have observed 29 Ramadan fast till today. They will try to see the crescent moon today. The United Kingdom will celebrate Eid or Eid al-Fitr tomorrow i.e. June 4 if the moon is sighted today. If the moon is not sighted, Ramadan month will complete 30 days and Eid al-Fitr will be celebrated on June 5. Nearly 5 percent of the UK's population is comprised of Muslims.
