The holy month of Ramadan, which commenced in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) along with other parts of the Middle East on May 6, will end next week. On the evening of June 3, the Hilal crescent sighting teams in Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Fujairah, Dubai, Ras Al-Khaimah and Umm Al Quawain will be on lookout for the Hilal crescent, which would determine the date of Eid al-Fitr 2019.

Notably, moon sighting is essential for Muslims as dates of lunar month is based upon the crescent sighting. If the new moon is sighted on the 29th date of an Islamic month, then the new month would begin from the next day. If the moon is not sighted, then the next day is marked as 30th date of the ongoing month. Pakistan Launches pakmoonsighting.pk - the Official Crescent Sighting Website, App And Hijri Calendar

Eid-al-Fitr is celebrated on the 1st date of Shawwal, the month succeeding Ramadan. If the new moon in UAE will be sighted on Monday (June 3), the Eid will be celebrated on Tuesday (June 4). If the moon remains unseen on Monday, then the festival would be observed on Wednesday (June 5).

Along with the UAE, attempts to sight the hilal crescent would also be undertaken on June 3 in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and other parts of the Middle East and Africa.

Barring the South Asian region of India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, the rest of the world began Ramadan fasts on May 6. In these four nations, the Ramadan crescent was not sighted, and therefore, the fasts began a day later, from June 7.

Attempts to sight the Eid moon will be undertaken in the Indian subcontinent region on June 4. If sighted, the festival would be observed on June 5. If not, then Eid al-Fitr will be celebrated on June 6.
