Riyadh, August 1: Muslim in Saudi Arabia will look for the moon this evening ahead of the Eid al-Adha or Eid-ul-Adha festival. The Supreme Court of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) has urged Muslims in the country to participate in the Eid al-Adha moon sighting efforts and report their testimonies. Based on the sighting on the moon, the date for Eid al-Adha festival, also known as Bakrid, will be announced. The Al Arabiya channel will host live streaming of the moon sighting efforts that will determine the date for Eid al-Adha festival in Saudi Arabia. Under the Islamic lunar calendar, a new month begins upon the sighting of a crescent moon on the 29th day of the ongoing month. If the moon is not sighted, the month completes 30 days and a new month begins the next day. Eid al-Adha, the festival of sacrifice, is celebrated on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah month. Today is the 29th of Dhul Qadah in KSA. If the moon is sighted today, Dhu al-Hijjah month will begin from August 2 and Eid al-Adha will be celebrated on August 11.

If the moon remains unseen, Dhul Qadah month will complete 30 days. To celebrate Eid al-Adha, Muslims offer animal sacrifice and distribute its meat to the poor. They also undertake the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca during Dhu al-Hijjah month.
