Riyadh/New Delhi, Aug 11: The date for Eid al-Adha celebration will be finalised today, depending on the crescent moon which is to be sighted this evening. Eid al-Adha is the second of the two major festivals celebrated by Muslims -- the first being Eid al-Fitr which was celebrated in June. As per the Islamic calendar, Eid al-Adha is celebrated on the 10th day of Dhul Hijjah, the final month as per the Islamic calendar.
If the moon is sighted today, the month of Dhul Hijjah will begin, and Eid al-Adha will be celebrated on August 21. If the crescent remains invisible, Eid al-Adha would be celebrated on August 22. Click here for live streaming of moon sighting updates via Makkah TV online.
The Grand Mosque in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, is expected to make the final announcement on Eid moon sighting post namaz-e-maghrib or the evening prayers.
In India, the respective hilal committees in Hyderabad, Patna, Delhi and other major cities will make an announcement tonight. Muslims have been asked to submit testimonies in case of spotting the crescent with the naked eye.
On the occasion of Eid al-Adha, it is obligatory for financially stable Muslims to sacrifice of a bovine or cattle and distribute its meet among the poor section of the community.
