Mumbai, June 7: Eid al-Adha, also known as Eid Ul Azha, Bakrid and Bakra Eid, is one of the two major Islamic festivals celebrated across the world by Muslim community. Eid al-Adha is observed on the 10th day of Dhul Hijjah, the twelfth and final month in the Islamic calendar. To those who don't know, each Islamic month lasts for 29 or 30 days, depending on the moon sighting. Muslims look for the moon on 29th of each month. If the moon is sighted, the ongoing month ends and a new month starts from the next day. If the moon remains invisible, a new month commences after the ongoing month completes 30 days. June 6 was 29th of Dhul Qadah, the month before Dhul Hijjah.
Following the ritual of moon sighting, the Supreme Court of Saudi Arabia has declared that the crescent moon was sighted in the country on Thursday, June 6. Therefore, Dhul Hijjah shall begin from Friday, June 7.
