July 31 marks the celebration of an auspicious day of Deep Amavasya also known as Ashada Amavasya. Amavasya is a No Moon Day and people perform a special Deep Puja on this day. People decorate their houses and clean all the diyas and light them in the evening. History and Significance

There is a belief in the Indian culture that a lamp will eliminate all darkness and bring in positive radiations. So on a Deep Amavasya, a puja is performed and people lit diyas and decorate their houses. It is said that these lights will drive away all evils and bad powers, bringing in brightness in their homes and lives. The puja is dedicated to a deity of one's choice and to Pancha Maha Bhootas (five primordial elements - Air, Water, Fire, Sky and the Earth). People also bow down to Goddess Lakshmi, Goddess Saraswati and Goddess Parvati. This day marks the welcoming of the holiest months od Shravan from the next day.

Celebrations of Deep Amavasya

On the day of Deep Amavasya, people clean and decorate their houses and brings out all the diyas. Some people also make a special kolam rangoli outside their homes and keep the diyas after performing a puja. It is an auspicious day marked just like the celebrations of Diwali.

The day is also celebrated as Gatari Amavasya by some, which involves having a great feast consisting of non-veg food before beginning the month of Shravan. During the holy month of Shravan, people abstain from eating non-veg food, having alcohol etc. So before beginning the month, they celebrate a good feast with family and friends, which is called the Gatari Amavasya.
