Dahi Handi or Gopalakala is the annual sporting festival that is marked on the day following Krishna Janmashtami and is celebrated with great fervor and enthusiasm by people across Maharashtra. This festival aims to celebrate the life and stories of Lord Krishna and his natkhat or naughtier traits as a child. Based on the story of a young Lord Krishna stealing makhan or butter from the neighbours, the celebration of Dahi Handi is focused on organising grand events across Maharashtra where people form a human pyramid to try and break an earthen pot filled with butter or curd.
